Will Liverpool overtake Newcastle in top-four race?

Newcastle United have defied expectations this season, losing only two of their 23 matches to be a top contender for a top-four finish.

Eddie Howe’s side defeated Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, and also managed to take a point off Arsenal and Manchester City earlier this campaign.

But the Magpies’ recent form has been highly disappointing as they have registered just a single win from their previous seven top-flight matches.

Their most recent league encounter at St James’ Park saw Liverpool defeating them by a 2-0 scoreline

Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo fired two early goals to make a strong start for Jurgen Klopp’s side. And then things went from bad to worse for the home side as Nick Pope got his marching orders for handling the ball outside his penalty area.

However, it was encouraging to see that Newcastle didn’t give up despite being 2-0 down and reduced to 10-men.

They played with character in front of their home crowd but the result was ultimately a 2-0 defeat for them.

The latest setback has raised fears that Liverpool will be able to overtake them in the top-four race.

The Merseyside giants are currently six points behind the Magpies but they also have a game in hand.

The Reds can hit a spectacular run of form to clinch the final Champions League spot, with Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United likely to finish in the top three positions. They have also received a boost as several of their key players have returned from injury in top Liverpool news

We believe that Newcastle must step up their levels in the coming weeks to regain their momentum. Otherwise, Liverpool will soon overtake them in the top-four race.

Eddie Howe’s side boast one of the best defences in the English league, conceding only 15 goals so far this season. But the lack of goals from their attackers is seems to be the main issue for them.

The Magpies have managed to score only three goals from their last five league games and have also tied 11 of their 23 matches this season.

Miguel Almiron is their topscorer this term but the Paraguay international has scored only one goal in his previous seven league matches.

Newcastle United fixtures show they will face Manchester United in the EFL Cup final on Sunday, and so their immediate focus will be to win the Wembley Stadium encounter.
