Newcastle United will be keen to return to winning ways when they welcome Sheffield United to St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League. 

The Blades will be relegated to the Championship if they fail to beat the Magpies, who are still firmly in the mix to secure Europa League football next season despite losing their previous game.

Newcastle were in buoyant mood when they headed to Crystal Palace as they had just defeated Tottenham Hotspur in a convincing 4-0 success at St James’ Park. 

But they failed to build on that success at Selhurst Park as they fell to a disappointing 2-0 loss – their 10th away league defeat of the season. 

Jean-Philippe Mateta was the standout performer for the hosts as he netted twice in the second-half to provide a vital contribution in their victory. 

Despite the defeat, Newcastle are still firmly in the mix to seal Europa League football for next season. 

They are currently seventh in the Premier League table with two points ahead of West Ham United and three behind Manchester United. 

Meanwhile, Sheffield United will be relegated from the English top-flight if they fail to beat the Magpies on Saturday. 

They made things very difficult for United in their latest league encounter at Old Trafford but ultimately had to return empty handed from Manchester. 

Jayden Bogle and Ben Bereton Diaz scored either side of a Harry Maguire equaliser, but Bruno Fernandes netted twice and assisted another to help the Red Devils to a 4-2 success. 

Sheffield United’s survival hopes are almost over as they are bottom of the table with just 16 points from 34 games.

Manager Eddie Howe will be missing a lot of players this weekend due to injury issues. Sven Botman, Joe Willock, Matt Targett, Jamaal Lescelles, Kieran Trippier, Joelinton and Miguel Almiron are all currently in the infirmary and will not be available. 

As for Sheffield United, Max Lowe, John Egan, Daniel Jebbison, George Baldock and Rhys Norrington-Davies will be absent on Saturday due to fitness problems.
