Newcastle United’s Dan Burn enjoys dream debut as England beat Albania 2-0

Football Today has been dominated with news of debutants impressing for their national teams.

Dan Burn and Myles Lewis-Skelly both were given debuts by England boss Thomas Tuchel and the duo repaid the faith of their manager by putting in sensational displays.

The Newcastle defender scored on Sunday to help his club win 2-1 over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, ending their 70-year domestic trophy drought.

The towering defender produced another excellent performance in Friday’s victory over Albania.

Lewis-Skelly opened the scoring for the Three Lions, sliding home a composed finish after a perfectly-weighted pass from Jude Bellingham.

Burn threatened to extend the scoreline but his effort came off the crossbar.

Albania improved after the break and Ezri Konsa had to make a huge last-ditch challenge to deny Jasir Asani.

However, Harry Kane soon put the game to bed by scoring his 70th international goal from close range.

Kane and Lewis-Skelly were the goalscorers, but Burn was also one of the standout performers for England.

The experienced centre-back played the full 90 minutes and had an incredible 153 touches in the game.

He completed 135 of his 137 passes, which means his accuracy was 99%.

The 32-year-old completed 100% of his long balls and registered seven clearances and two tackles.

He lost the ball on only three occasions and won four of his six aerial duels.

Burn has been a key player for Newcastle since joining the club from Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2022 for a fee around 13 million.

He has made 139 appearances across all competitions over the years, with seven goals and three assists to his name.

Despite his age, the defender has started 27 times in the Premier League this season, averaging 5.0 clearances, 2.6 ball recoveries and 1.1 tackles per game.
