Necastle United have enjoyed a spectacular 2022-23 season so far. They are currently sitting third in the Premier League table, having 30 points from a possible 45. The Tyneside club will now be aiming to secure European football for next season.
The Magpies brought in some good players in the summer transfer window, including the likes of Alexander Isak, Sven Botman, Nick Pope and Matt Targett. And the result of that investment is now there for all to see.
Eddie Howe’s side made a slow start to the season as they picked up only a single victory from their first seven league games. However, they made a remarkable turnaround in October as they went on winning one game after another. The Magpies managed to earn a point at Manchester United before defeating the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.
However, they will not be in action again this month as the World Cup has kickstarted in Qatar, with five of their players named in the 2022 World Cup squads.
Newcastle stars at the 2022 World Cup
Five Newcastle players have made the trip to Qatar to represent their respective countries in the prestigious tournament. Kieran Trippier has been excellent at St James’ Park this season, featuring in all 15 games and earning a goal. His inclusion in the England lineup was no surprise for anyone.
Nick Pope has also been fortunate enough to make the cut but he is unlikely to start, with Jordan Pickford ahead of him in the pecking order. Manager Gareth Southgate has also included Callum Wilson in his squad but he is expected to play sporadically only.
Meanwhile, Bruno Guimaraes has been absolutely exceptional for the Magpies this campaign. But he is not guaranteed a regular spot because of the tough competition for places in the Brazil team. Fabian Schar is also a great talent and he has deservedly been confirmed in Switzerland’s squad for the World Cup.
